A Guide to the Japan Travel Bureau Foundation
●The Foundation's Mission
To contribute to the sound and sustained growth of travel and tourism and, by working for the general advance of the travel and tourism industries, to serve society.
●The Range of Our Activities
As our non-profit activities, we operate the Travel Library, engage in independent research, hold seminars and symposiums, and issue publications, all as part of our multi-faceted support of those engaged in tourism-related businesses.
We are one of the few Japanese think tanks or consultancies specializing in the travel and tourism industries, drawing upon our own considerable store of accumulated information and know-how, and upon our association with the JTB Group. This positions us to undertake market research services at the nation-wide and international levels, to provide assistance in travel-and tourism-related marketing, and to develop proposals for national or local government tourism policies, or within regions, and for tourism promotion.

Tourism and Cultural Promotion Activities (non-profit, independent activities)
1. Running the Travel Library
This was opened in October 1978, and is a rich source of books, maps, magazines and other materials on the various regions of Japan and the nations of the world, and their distinctive travel, and tourist / cultural features. It is open to the general public without charge. With over 26,000 books, it is a useful and enjoyable source of information for those interested in travel.
2. Independent Research
In travel and tourism, we plan and implement regular forward-looking basic research, and market research to anticipate future trends. This covers six general topics of research and a number of specific topics. Every year, we give a presentation of our research findings to ensure their widest possible dissemination in July.
3. Seminars & Symposiums
The findings of the foundation's research are shared as widely as possible by holding symposiums on Japanese domestic and overseas travel trends.
・ Japanese travel trends symposium (December)
・ Japanese overseas travel trends symposium (July)
4. Training Activities
In Order to train up those who will be responsible for supporting tourism and promoting regional development, we hold a course on the basics of tourism (June) and a practical "how to" course (November).
5. Publications
We have four regular publications. One is the bimonthly "Tourism and Culture" which provides the cultural context for information on tourism and travel. We also publish "Travel Market Trends - Annual Edition" with general coverage of industry trends, and quarterly reports of our own independent research. "Travelers Trends" and "Travel Outlook" are published annually.
There are also a number of various other publications contributing to the advance of tourism-related business, including "Modern Dictionary of Tourism, "Educational publications on Eco-Tourism," etc.
Sponsored Activities
1. Sponsored Research
●Travel-Related Market Research.
We perform ongoing research into trends in Japanese recreational travel, tourist destinations, and accommodation facilities, and into the travel market in general. We analyze the primary data to predict demand and to prepare proposals for marketing tourist destinations, etc., and for promotions.
●Developing Tourism Policies, Regional Visions, and Plans.
When requested by national or local government organizations, we prepare proposals for tourism policies, basic plans for tourism in urban and regional areas ("visions" for tourism), and perform the surveys upon which to base the related regional and other policies.
●Developing Proposals and Business Plans for Tourism Facilities and Accommodation Facilities.
Based upon a proper understanding of tourist needs and trends in facility development, we prepare business plans for new accommodation facilities, tourist recreational facilities, and a wide range of other facilities. Plans are also prepared for the renewal of existing facilities or the active stimulation of their operation and sales, suggestions are given for improvements, and proposals made for planned reforms.
●Overseas Tourism-Related Research.
We perform primarily tourism-related surveys for Japan's Official Development Assistance Agency, and we accept commissions from overseas governments and tourism ministries for planning proposals to promote tourism. We also use our analyses of the Japanese overseas traveler's market to prepare promotional plans.
2. Sponsored Training
●Providing Seminars and symposiums.
We accept commissions from national and local government to hold seminars and symposiums on tourism promotion and the revitalization of local communities.
●Providing Lecturers for Hospitality Training.
We provide lecturers for hospitality training to assist in the development of human resources for the tourism industry.
