With increasing attention on stimulating local economies through tourism, there are a growing number of cases in which local businesses, who hold the public viewpoint of sustainable local stimulus, are taking the lead in redeveloping local real estate such as vacant homes and vacant lots, highlighting the local community’s beauty, and creating new business (tourism services), leading to stimulation of the local community.
In such cases, there are efforts to create spaces which make the most of the unique qualities of the community and services which will drive spending through the redevelopment of real estate, and to maintain and develop businesses by treating residents and companies as markets in addition to tourists.
In this special feature, we wish to consider four communities as case studies, and explore how to implement tourism development which aids in local revitalization through real estate redevelopment, as well as its future potential and the challenges to overcome.
